It all starts here...

Mary Di Carlo is an Australian artist based in Melbourne. Her work explores identity, emotion, and the space between what we show and what we keep hidden.

With a strong background in graphic design, she calls on this skill and applies it to her painting and drawing, often focusing on the human face and form. Rather than aiming for exact likeness, she uses line, colour, and layered surfaces to capture feeling and mood.

Her portraits sit somewhere between realism and abstraction.  Drips, vertical lines and broken colour interrupt the image.

Her practice continues to evolve through experimentation in her Melbourne studio.

At its core, her work invites you to look a little deeper—beyond the surface—and connect with something more personal and real.

About Mary Di Carlo

My artistic journey began with a simple brushstroke and a deep love of colour. As an Australian artist based in Melbourne, my practice is grounded in creating work that feels honest, emotional, and considered.

With a background in graphic design, I bring a strong sense of composition and layering to my paintings. I work mainly with the human face and form, using line, colour, and texture to explore identity and feeling rather than exact likeness.

My work often sits between realism and abstraction. Through paint, drips, vertical lines and fractured colour, I explore how identity shifts and changes over time.

At the heart of my practice is curiosity about people and the complexity of self. I am always experimenting in the studio, pushing materials and techniques to create work that feels authentic and meaningful, and reflects ongoing personal and artistic growth.
